Northside Cork sports clubs scoop extra €168,000 - Kelleher

Cork North-Central TD Billy Kelleher has said three top sports clubs in the northside have emerged as the big winners in a new round of funding for the city after scooping a total of €168,000 in extra cash.

That is on top of €560,000 awarded to the clubs earlier this year under the Sports Capital Programme 2005 by the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism.

‘Under this top-up announcement under the RAPID programme for disadvantaged areas, Mayfield United AFC is to receive €48,000; Na Piarsaigh Hurling and Football Club will get €90,000; and St Vincent’s Hurling and Football Club has been earmarked for €30,000. I would like to congratulate them on their success in securing the extra cash.

‘The funding will come as a huge help to these organisations that have become known for their sporting ability. They play an invaluable role in the local community and their work is widely acknowledged.

‘They provide young people of all ages with an important social outlet that fosters a sense of teamwork and co-operation. It is important to give young people an outlet to lead them away from anti-social behaviour,’ said Deputy Kelleher, who is the deputy Government chief whip.

He said he hoped the cash would help improve sports facilities in the three clubs and develop their proud reputations.
